Placement types

IMMS keeps close track of where each specific item is located when it is “around” (home, discarded, or deleted). All of the possible locations for items are organized into a number of placement types.

In general, an item’s placement in IMMS can be one of the following:

Each of these options are further subdivided, so the final placement type depends on the matching item grouping, the location’s usage type, or the status of the transport unit.

Overall, this provides the following placement types:

The placement types play various roles in IMMS calculations. The most important role is in connection with calculation of pick orders based on holds.

The individual placement types are described in more detail in the following sections.

Closed item grouping

The item is registered as “shelved” at a branch and matches a item grouping that has been marked as closed.

When an item is placed in this type of item grouping, IMMS sends a message to the LMS that the item is not available.

Depending on the “Skip picking items in closed item groupings” parameter, pick orders for items with this placement type can be hidden on the pick lists.

Item grouping - non-depot

The item is registered as “shelved” at a branch and matches a item grouping that has been not been indicated to be either closed or a depot.

The placement type has no other function aside from enabling these item groupings to be prioritized differently than item groupings labeled as depots.

Item grouping - depot

The item is registered as “shelved” at a branch and matches a item grouping that is not closed and is labeled as a depot.

The placement type has no other function aside from enabling these item groupings to be prioritized differently than item groupings which are not labeled as depots.

Holds shelf

The item is registered for a location with the usage type “Chaotic - Holds shelf”.

This type of location is used for reserved/ordered items which are ready for pickup. When an item fulfilling a hold is placed in this type of location at the pickup branch, IMMS sends a message to the LMS so that the hold can be fulfilled and the patron will be notified.

Exhibition

The item is registered for a location with the usage type “Chaotic - Exhibition”.

This usage type (and thus also this placement type) is intended for locations where items are placed that need to have a prominent location at the lending branches.

Storage

The item is registered for a location with the usage type “Chaotic - Storage”.

This placement type is typically used for media hotels since the capacity of such locations is considered to be available and suitable for these items.

In addition, the placement type plays a role in automatic replenishment since only items placed in this type of location can be selected for replenishment.

Available transport unit

The item is registered as part of a transport unit if the status has been set on “available”.

Unavailable transport unit

The item is registered as part of a transport unit if the status has been set on “unavailable”.

When an item is placed in this type of transport unit, IMMS sends a message to the LMS that the item is not available.

Depending on the “Skip picking items in unavailable transport units” parameter, pick orders for items with this placement type can be hidden on the pick lists.

Illegally placed

An item can be assigned this placement type for several reasons:
